Jefferson and the Election of 1800

After our discussion in class today, what do you think people will expect of Jefferson as President? Post two comments, one comment is your answer, the other a response to your classmates.

37 comments:

  1. I think that people will expect Jefferson to make many new changes to the government. I also think that people are going to expect a lot from Jefferson since he is the first president that is not a Federalist, which means that he has to fix the problems that the Federalists left the the government with. In addition, I think people expect Jefferson to completely run the country into the ground.

  2. Before Thomas Jefferson became America's second President, I think people thought well of Jefferson and had instincts that he would be a good leader. Thomas Jefferson became President because he was smart and capable of completing the job. Jefferson knew that by serving as President, he could lead the country better than anyone else at the time. By having more of a calm approach to his term (like an informal inauguration), I think that Jefferson appealed to much of America's anxious population. Since Jefferson had been Secretary of State and Vice President, I think people realized he had intelligence and ambition. Also, having had drafted the Declaration of Independence, people probably thought Jefferson would lead the country fairly and not disregard the Constitution's laws. All in all, I think people were optimistic about Jefferson's presidency.

  3. I totally agree with Courtney in that people expected a lot from Jefferson since he was not a Federalist. Nevertheless, I do not think that people expected Jefferson to ruin America or create chaos. Jefferson had a great resume. He definitely knew what he was getting into as the President and had the intelligence to successfully run America. Of course, Federalists had their doubts because Jefferson wanted to take a new approach towards the governmental system. Nonetheless, I think many Republicans had high hopes.

  4. I agree with Alex. Even though people were a little uncertain of what may happen to the country with Jefferson as the new president, they were ready to expect a new outlook on the government, since the Federalists screwed a lot of things up. Also, Alex mentioned that Jefferson was calm and less extravagent, but extremely smart and ambitious, which are great qualities for a leader. Lastly, I think that the people were anxious to see what would be done.

  5. Becoming president after George Washington and John Adams, Thomas Jefferson has some decent size shoes to fill. People's expectations of Jefferson were mostly around the idea of "this guy can handle being president, but not necessarily the same way as Washington and Adams." This was true because Jefferson was not a Federalist, and also he was pro-French. That being said, the people still had faith in his beliefs and ideas.

  6. Jefferson will be expected to make many changes to the government. He is expected to change all of the "mistakes" the federalists made in the government. However, many people expect Jefferson to complete "turn the world upside down". Everyone has different expectations for the government with Jefferson becoming President.

  7. Since Jefferson was not a federalists the people knew that he would be making some changes to the government. I believe the people had good intentions for Jefferson's presidency because he is a very smart man who has good intentions for the country. Even though Jefferson's intentions might not have been the same as some of the people. Even though Jefferson did not live up to the same expectations as Washington and Adams I believe that for his term he would help the country rather than hurt it.

  8. I think people will expect a lot from Jefferson because he id not a Federalist president so he will have to change and rearrange what the old government left him, which could possibly lead to the country downhill. Also I think the people thought he would not take on the responsibility and challenges of being the new president since George Washington and John Adams did a good job of running the country. Or however, they thought he would be a perfect person to lead the country. I feel the feelings of the people were mixed in the fact of they either thought he was fit to be the next president or he wasn’t.

  9. Jefferson was basically just a place holder after Washington and Adams. I agree with Zak L because Jefferson has the standards to be a president just not as good as a president as Washington or Adams. Everyone knew that Jefferson was making changes to the previously federalist government. I believe that the people did not expect the changes to be to drastic because they knew Jefferson was somewhat a smart man.

  10. I agree with Courtney and how she said people would expect Jefferson to make many new changes to the government. Also that he was the first non Federalist president and how he will need to construct and fix up the problems the government was left with after Adams left.

  11. People will expect Jefferson to be the epitome of a subverter. The epitome of, because he was a smart man and a very capable politician (as even Hamilton recognized). A consummate example of a subverter, because he will indeed subvert or undermine the established system of government (the Federalist's system) in favor of a Democratic Republican system (smaller government lacking the Alien Act) in a legal and respectable manner.

In more concise terms, U.S. citizens recognized he would tick off Federalists, but the change that would do so would be organized and honest.

  12. I agree with Zak. The people had high expectations, but with good reason; he had a fantastic track record as a politician and was being compared to GDubs. He would be expected to be "different," but also competent.

  13. The country is going to have very high expectations of Thomas Jefferson considering his impressive achievements in the past. But, they will also be extremely critical of his actions because he is a not a federalist. He will be expected to do a lot during his time, but he must still apeal to the federalist part of the country instead of doing whatever he as a republican thinks is right

  14. I agree with Drew in that Jefferson, being a republican, must make sure he expresses his ideas as beneficial to both the federalists and the non-federalists. Without having the majority of the U.S. as his support, being president would not be so easy, and that would be a problem. As we know, Jefferson did do a solid job as president and was successful because of the intelligent approaches he took to each aspect of presidency.

  15. I agree that Jefferson was expected to bring change to the country. Like Alexandra stated, he had great experience from bring Secretary of State as well as Vice President. In class today, we discussed the fall of the Federalists. People had enough with the federalists, they wanted to see our country in a new direction. Jefferson had offered fresh, new ideas that would help decrease our debt as well as lessoning the size and expense of our government. Jefferson also wanted more power to the states, which some people agreed with. His inauguration was surprisingly simple and gave the impression to people that positive changes may occur and that Jefferson really cared about doing his job more than looking great.

  16. As Jefferson steps into office I think he will be very successful but bring changes while in power. For years Jefferson has been a key member in the formation of the United States government; first as the author of the Declaration of Independence, next as the Vice President to Adams, and now the President himself. I feel his experience will guide him to make educated decisions that are well designed for our government. On the other hand, now that Adams is not in office and a new party is in power it is interesting how Jefferson’s presidency will contrast Adams.

  17. As Zak pointed out, Jefferson has a big role being the president after preceding Washington and Adams. Therefore, Jefferson had to live up to these names and essentially exceed any expectations made by the people to prove his authority.

  18. I think that Jefferson encouraged people to think that he was sure of bringing change to the country. Therefore, because people were expecting so much change he decided to get rid the federalist party in the courts. People were expecting Jefferson to do what the first two presidents did but better. Jefferson was expected to fix the problems and the debt that was created with the other two presidents. This gave Jefferson good and bad advantages. If he were to do well he would be looked at as a great president. However, if he were not to live up to his expectations he would fail.

  19. I agree with Nisha especially when she said that he offered a simple solutions and impressed the people. This defiantly showed us how he wanted to make a name for himself within the government helping his political party gain supports. By doing a good job at being President since he was the first non Federalist, it was his job to show that the country would not only be a Federalist run country.

  20. I believe people will expect a lot from Jefferson because he was not a Federalist president so he will have to change the current government which can be very hard. The people probably underestimated his ability to be a good president since George Washington and John Adams did a good job of running the country. I think the citizens believed either he was going to do great or going to do terrible.

  21. I agree with Zak because he has a big role and has to live up to great expectations following Washington and Adams.

  22. I think most of the American citizens were expecting TJ to figure out ways of cleaning the huge national debts. Also hoping the new president will improve the society economically by developing new jobs and trades with other countries. In addition, they expect to live stablely without involving in any wars.

  23. Unfortunately, Jefferson had a LOT to own up to. Especially considering the fact that he's living up to these immense expectations. He's following in the footsteps of 2 amazing leaders and he has to prove himself ready to take on the job. He had to change around the government due to the fact that he wasn't a Federalist, unlike the Presidents preceding him. Jefferson promised change, but with a promise like that, people have even higher expectations. He kind of set the bar even higher and put even more pressure on himself too.

  24. I also agree with Tiffany because she correctly expressed even MORE expectations for President Jefferson. Not only were they hoping for change in the government but they also wanted to see him help clean up these large debts.

  25. Since the formation of the two parties the people have long awaited a non-federalist president to enter the oval office. As a result, most federalists are anticipation that Jefferson's reforms are going to reek havoc on the newly formed rules of the Federalist presidents. The non-federalist fraction of the population are quite the opposite. While some may question Jefferson's lax attitude, most see him as an equal that they can appeal to and rely on to make their voices heard. In a way he applies these mothods but it was not expected that his undergoing of these methods would be as extreme as biased impeachments of regional judges.

  26. Although Alex and Courtney's last sentences (kind of summing up their main points) were totally opposing one another, I agree with both. Courtney said that Many people expected Jefferson to run the country into the ground. In a sense that's correct because he is entering a tough time period and not many people would be able to save a country at this point. But many realize, as Alex said, that he is a very intelligent man who is highly qualified for the job. Many respect his relaxed approach at governing the country and they especially respect his credentials. He has performed countless tasks for the country and much of the population will recognize this as he enters office.

  27. Citizens had extremely high expectations for Jefferson as the new president. He had new ideas that promoted positive change and helped him gain popularity. His goal was to rid the country of Federalism and to promote a smaller, more centralized, government. The country has a lot of faith in Jefferson because he has shown he has the power to keep it running smoothly as he served under other Presidents aswell as the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Overall, Jefferson is a huge change from Adams.

  28. However,i do have to agree with Brian in that some people did think that Jefferson becoming President would be harmful to the country. These would be the citizens that were Federalists and wanted a large democracy.

  29. I agree with jamie. Jefferson's like the new kid on the block and in order to be accepted he has to prove to his peers that he is worthy of this high position.

  30. The election of 1800 was one that had strong relevant issues to the people thrust in to it. The Alien and Sedition Acts were taking their toll and many people were afraid that the Federalist were trying to use the issues with France to their advantage. With Jefferson taking office many people probably expected the new republicans to lower the taxes they hated so much as well as get rig of the new Federal military build up and to get rid of the Alien and Sedition Acts. Their expectations were not unreasonable for the new republican regime but their would have been strong disagreements between the new people coming in and the people that were already there, even in Congress.

  31. I agree with Peter that the people in the government already did expect havoc to break loose. At the same time I think that the Republicans thought that the country would fall to havoc if the Federalists stayed in power. So really it was just a matter of everyone thinking they were right and not being open to other people's ideas.

  33. After the discussion about Jefferson and the election of 1800, I believe people will take a new look at the president and expect new changes, and have high expectations of the way he takes upon his new role. He is the first non-federalist president. Therefore, the way he goes about things and answers to the public will be different, because simply, his views are different than a federalist president would think. Also, he's following Washington and Adams. The first two presidents which have made quite the impression on the US goverment. Washington, being the first president, really had no expectations because he wasnt having to follow anyone in particular because he was starting this goverement, Adams had the toughest job out of all three (Washington, him self, and Jefferson). Adams had to follow a great president, and became a successful one him self. Jefferson has to follow to great presidents, but yet- make his own impression on the US as a person, and make sure things run smoothly. Thus for- i believe people expect highly of Jefferson as the new president.

  34. I agree with Courtney and Alexandra. Jefferson was also a very wise man, and had a good campaign running behind him being that he had a Secretary of state, as well as a VP. That takes alot of time to find a suitable one. Because, people don't just look at you when voting, they look at who your gunna have report to you in office. Jefferson took this role upon him, because he knew what he was coming into, and what he was poking his head into. Therefore- he was a very wise, and respected President.

  35. I also agree with Courtney, Jefferson was very intelligent. He had a very good VP but he did have very large shoes to fill. Jefferson was the best person to fix our government in a time of need. He was a very respected president for taking on this very difficult challenge.

  36. I feel as if though Jeffersons expectations would be high, He was present during the birth of the country and has witnessed for a large amount of time how things have been operated and how things came to be giving him a experience advantage. This would also allow him to know how to sucessfully implement change more than others would be able to. Prior to his election the consensus was that he had rather large shoes to fill but he seemed best fit to do so. Also the fact that he was the first president who was not federalist would mean that his ideas would be more innovative as well.

  37. I agree with peter with that people would have had fear as well because the change in party and power was new and feared that it would be a major contribution to the country being left in shambles, but this was mainly hysteria so it became widespread and the country did not want to risk it.
